Music Is Haram

Music Is Haram
In recent years, music has become an extremely important issue for Muslims across the entire world, to such an extent that it is affecting every Muslim in today’s modern day society, the so called  modern era.

Today, individuals are being confronted by a situation where one is forced to listen to music whether by choice or without.

Music is played in nearly all department stores, super markets, streets, technologies, all kinds of transportation, sadly enough, I can’t even believe I’m writing this, even Muslim households. Some even try to justify music as being halal, Allah save us, Aameen.

No matter which direction we go, we are intoxicated with music. The increasing popularity of music, which is prevalent in the so called modern era, poses an incredible danger for Muslims.

Music is Haram, as is clearly stated through references within the context of the Holy Qur'an along with the Hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) confirm that music is indeed haraam.

Interpreters of the Qur'an have defined the term "lahwal hadith" which is mentioned in the Qur'an as:

1 ~ Singing and listening to songs.

2 ~ Purchasing of male and female singers.

3 ~ Purchase of instruments of fun and amusement.

When Sayyidana Abdullah Ibne Mas'ood, a very close companion of our Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about the meaning of the term "lahwal hadith", he replied,

"I swear by Him besides whom there is no other God, that it refers to ghinaa (singing)."

This statement, he repeated three times. This view is unanimously supported by the four Khalifas, the eminent Sahabaah, Tabi'een, the four Imaams and other reliable Islamic scholars and authorities.

"There will be people of my Ummah who will seek to make lawful; fornication, wine-drinking and the use of ma'aazif (musical instruments)." (Bukhari)

Analysis of the Arabic word "ma'aazif" portrays that it refers to musical instruments, the sounds of those musical instruments and singing with the accompaniment of instruments.

Closer analysis of the wordings of the Hadith establishes the prohibition of music. Firstly, the words "seek to make lawful" portrays that music is not permissible, as logically one can only seek to make lawful that which is not allowed.

Secondly, if music was not prohibited, then it would not have been brought within the same context as fornication and wine-drinking.

A very ignorant and misguided attitude is to perceive music as a form of pleasure and passing of time, since the messages of today`s music follow a general theme of fornication, love, drugs and freedom.

This idea of freedom, "It's my life, I'll do what I want, thank you very much." is a predominant, underlying theme of today`s music.

It is being used as a means for drilling modern ideologies that are totally contrary to the Islamic Shariah, into the minds and hearts of Muslims.

One should abstain from evil audacities such as listening to music and encourage others to do the same, i.e not listen to music.

Especially those who believe, oh Muslim fear Allah (subhana wa ta'ala), be Muslim by nature, not Muslim by name.

May Almighty Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) guide us all to the straight path, Aameen.

  2. Music really can be suggestive nowadays, pressuring our youth to indulge in said activities such as drugs/sex/violence just to name a few but as a music lover myself, I have to say, there is better music out there! Give me a song that talks about Mama, the importance of hard work, and the value of a dollar and I'm happy as a lark! I've learned that for every bad thing in this world, there is something good around every corner. We just have to learn where to look and seek out the good instead of the bad. Suggestive music, I could live without! Just don't touch my songs about Mama! LOL! Take care Iremi Nisces. Hopefully today's Muslim's and youth as long as they insist on breaking the rules, can find a happy medium or better music as long it is pleasing to Allah.

  4. Asalaam Alaikum. JazakAllah Khair for this reminder. There are those who can find "benefit"/good in anything haram, and use it as justification to break the rule. Pork has iron and potassium, alcohol lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and marijuana helps the body fight infection - a few examples Estagfirullah. Ignoring the obvious terrible results. A broken clock is "right" two times a day but who'd follow it? No one with any sense right?.... well, then again, some of us are following "broken clocks".

I used to be a Christian where music was a form of worship and I used to sing myself and so I know first hand how music can manipulate emotions. One song will make you cry and have you thinking of a perfect world in harmony then, the next will make you angry and remind you of heart-break, an injustice or a loss. As Muslims we should trust the Prophet (saw) and "LIVE" Islam (as much as we can In Sha Allah). May Allah SWT guide us all, and keep us on the straight path.
